In the Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH) unit, vacuum treatment of the melt is carried out in a refractory-lined vessel equipped with two snorkels immersed in the steel bath. As system pressure is reduced, the melt rises into the vessel and circulation is induced by the injection of inert gas into the up-leg snorkel. The RH unit is usually employed for vacuum treatment and decarburization of long sequences of low-carbon steel grades.


RH SNORKELS: They are developed from the package service contract works of RH DEGASSER. While professionally serving global customers of RH DEGASSER, OSYMEN absorbed many global customers experiences through repeated trials and improvement to the Snorkel in the package contracts and this skill has become matured.


With professional equipment in the plant, casting, assembling, drying, inspecting processes are strictly adhering to company standard so as to ensure reliable and consistent product quality. They are assembled by Magnesia chrome Bricks, Castable, steel shell and argon pipe. OSYMEN has own unique technology and experience of producing Snorkel with properties of good thermal shock stability, good erosion resistance and long service life.

    1. RH SNORKEL inner linings: Under vacuum conditions due to alkalinity changes of strong alkaline slag mixed molten steel erosion, and at the same time, on and off high-pressure spray of cool Argon operation leading to rapid temperature fluctuations, inner linings at Snorkel are under very harsh working conditions, refractories service life is the shortest at this area. Refractories used here can be used at any parts of the RH installations. OSYMEN recommends the long lasting Rebounded Fused Magnesite Chrome Brick (RMK)  and UMAS products.
    2. RH SNORKEL outer linings: Refractories here often damaged first due to changing alkalinity and high alkaline over heated slag high pressure erosion damage and high frequency shear rupture, leading to disruption of smelting. Over many years at many places experience of improvements OSYMEN owns self-technology products of high-quality special use Castable CTM-90. 
    3. Throat working lining: Under vacuum conditions super strong penetrating molten steel erosion, high alkaline slag attack and erosion, such harsh working conditions are most likely to have accidents and affect production safety. Therefore, refractories quality requirements cannot be vague. OSYMEN recommends the highest quality Rebounded Fused Magnesite Chrome Brick (RMK) products.
    4. Lower vessel working lining: Under over heated alkalinity change of high alkaline slag attack and molten steel vigorous erosion, vacuum damage, over heat damage and on/off operation temperature changes, Rebounded Fused Magnesite Chrome Brick (RMK) Products would be a choice at this part.
    5. Upper vessel working lining: Under high temperature alkaline air erosion and interrupted operation and high alkaline slag molten steel splashing and erosion, Rebounded Fused Magnesite Chrome Brick (RMK), Direct-bonded magnesite-chrome bricks (DMK) , Magnesite-spinel brick (MAS) products are choices at this part.
    6. Alloy inlet working lining: under long term hot alkaline air erosion and mechanical abrasion, RMK or PAS products are choices at this part.
    7. Vacuum chamber safety lining and smoke tube working lining: Under long term hot waste gas erosion and mechanical damage, DMK and MAS products can be used.
    8. Vacuum chamber permanent lining: Providing last protection for refining furnaces safety production, DMK, MAS or HA products can be used.
    9. Smoke tube permanent lining, Alloy inlet permanent lining, Oxygen nozzle working lining, Observation hole working lining: Mainly under mechanical stress damage, CTM-70 Castable can be used.
    10. Vacuum chamber steel shell and safety lining connecting material, recirculation tube and vessel bottom connecting material: The last defence line of eliminating unpredictable dangerous hidden risk which is very important to safety production. OSYMEN’s high quality Monomass OSRM-18 or CTM-90 can be used at these areas, and should be strictly installed at site under OSYMEN’s operation instructions.
    11. Snorkel inner lining and recirculation tube connecting area, Lower-Snorkel and Upper-Snorkel inner lining connecting area: RH Degasser is operated in vacuum conditions, it is very dangerous if not tightly sealed, will lead to leaking of molten steel. Most of the time causing serious accident. For this reason, OSYMEN has developed specialized sealing mortar MT-SM10, evenly spread over these areas for ensuring safety and maintenance of connecting linings during furnace dismantling.
